Abuja: The Federal Government has urged states to collaborate with it in its effort to arrest the growing impact of desertification, land degradation and effects of climate change.
Minister of Environment, Mr. John Odey, said this in Dutse, Jigawa State, weekend, at the ceremony to commemorate the 2009 World Desertification Day (WDD). He said states should intensify efforts at educating farmers in their areas on the importance of planting trees, in order to save the Environment and enhance conducive agricultural weather.
Odey said farmers are properly placed to support Nigeria’s efforts at increasing the number of trees in the country. “It is our belief that a key solution to sustainable environment lies in building effective action at local level, taking a holistic approach to supporting peoples' livelihoods and reducing their vulnerability to environmental shocks. We must continue to strengthen the participatory approach by involving local communities in all our interventions," he said.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant, Mr. Rotimi Ajayi, Odey warned of the consequences of allowing desertification to continue to ravage our land, with many people are in danger of loosing their means of livelihoods.
